A New Chapter for Ducati
The Desmo450 MX isn’t simply a street motorcycle adapted for dirt.
Ducati developed it as a dedicated motocross platform, bringing technologies and engineering principles associated with the brand’s racing motorcycles into off-road competition.
At the center of the bike is a 449.6cc single-cylinder engine featuring Ducati’s desmodromic valve system. It produces a claimed 63.5 horsepower at 9,400 rpm and 39.5 lb-ft of torque at 7,500 rpm, with the rev limiter set at 11,900 rpm.
For a motocross rider, those numbers only tell part of the story.
Ducati designed the engine to deliver a broad, usable torque curve, giving riders strong drive out of corners while reducing the need for constant gear changes.
In other words: it’s not just about making power. It’s about making that power usable on the track.
Desmodromic Technology Goes Off-Road
The word Desmo matters here.
Ducati’s desmodromic valve system is one of the technologies most closely associated with the brand, and the Desmo450 MX brings it into Ducati’s new generation of off-road motorcycles.
Instead of relying on conventional valve springs alone, Ducati’s desmodromic system mechanically controls both the opening and closing of the valves.
For the Desmo450 MX, that helps Ducati combine high-rpm performance with the torque delivery needed in motocross.
The result is a 450cc-class motorcycle capable of revving all the way to 11,900 rpm.

So does weight.
The Desmo450 MX produces 63.5 hp while weighing just 231 pounds wet without fuel.
Ducati achieved that in part through an aluminum frame designed specifically around the demands of motocross. The frame and subframe use only 11 elements, helping Ducati balance weight, stiffness and packaging.
The compact design was also developed to give the rider freedom to move around the motorcycle — something that becomes especially important when braking, cornering, jumping or changing body position through technical sections.
Ducati Electronics — Now in Motocross
This may be one of the most interesting parts of the Desmo450 MX.
Ducati didn’t leave its electronics expertise on the pavement.
The Desmo450 MX includes:
- Ducati Traction Control
- Two standard Riding Modes
- Engine Brake Control
- Power Launch
- Quick Shift
- Ducati Fall Detection
- Customizable riding settings with the optional Wi-Fi module and Ducati X-Link app
The traction-control system was developed specifically for off-road use and estimates rear-wheel slip using engine speed and the bike’s dynamic motion.
With the X-Link system, riders can also customize throttle response, traction control, engine braking and launch-control settings.
That’s a very Ducati approach to motocross: give the rider performance, then give them the technology to control it.
Showa, Brembo, Galfer and Pirelli
The components surrounding the engine are equally serious.
Up front is a fully adjustable 49 mm Showa inverted fork with 12.2 inches of travel, paired with a fully adjustable Showa rear shock.
Braking combines Brembo components with Galfer discs, while the bike rolls on Takasago Excel rims fitted with Pirelli Scorpion MX32 Mid-Soft tires.
It’s a package designed around actual track performance rather than simply putting the Ducati name on a dirt bike.

The Desmo450 MX makes sense for the rider who wants more than simply another 450.
